Satellite Test Engineer (Permanent & Consultancy)

Company details

Do you want to launch your career in space? Join us! Whether it's working with satellites, developing docking systems, or building science instruments, you will have the opportunity to do meaningful work in challenging space projects.

At Redwire, you'll find a welcoming and diverse team where you can learn and grow while having great life-work balance.

Function

As a Satellite Test Engineer you will be responsible for the satellite functional and electrical testing, from unit level to full satellite testing.

You will take the lead in the preparation, execution, and reporting of complex tests. Testing in space can be hard, so you need to love problems, be able to look at them from a different perspective - from inside and outside of the box, pinpoint the issues, document them, and find solutions.

You will need to be able to translate a test plan into a detailed step-by-step procedure. This includes finding creative ways to cover the requirements verification by specific testing in an environment with complex hardware limitations for testing. You then will have to follow the step-by-step procedure, but also have the creativity to perform elaborate debugging of issues. After the test, you will have to create a complete and structured test report. The tests encompass both functional and electrical tests.

You should be able to work in a structured manner, thoroughly and with a clear focus to get the issues resolved in a cooperative spirit with a given time.

Redwire Space NV performs the launch and in-orbit testing of our satellites, so if you perform well during the Assembly, Integration and Testing (AIT) phase, you will be part of the launch team. In this case, you can support the launch as an operator and perform in-orbit commissioning activities, while handing over the satellite to our customer. You will also provide in-orbit support after launch and perform payload/instrument testing.

Profile

  • Master degree in engineering (software, aerospace, electronics, mechatronics, or similar).
  • Experience in satellite testing and software testing is an asset, but not mandatory. If you have no relevant experience, tell us why you have the right attitude and motivation.
  • Good knowledge of C-code and script languages to automate testing. You like to make work more efficient by continuously looking to automate routine tasks in scripts.
  • Strong background in debugging and software testing.
  • You are not afraid about diving into the details of a data interface, checking and debugging communication byte by byte according to a specified data protocol.
  • Able to setup a simple electrical test setup to measure current and voltage on a power interface.
  • You know linux and can easily find your way in the linux shell/terminal.
  • You are aware of the PUS services, or are willing to learn an elaborate space standard to understand to operate a satellite.
  • Fluency in English (speaking and writing) is an absolute must.
  • For specific projects, a background in photonics, single photon measurements, photon polarization characterization is required. Any background in this will be a definite advantage in the selection.
  • You can work with an oscilloscope and spectrum analyser (preferred, but not required).
  • Experience in scripting (TCL & Python is preferred, but not required). Any experience with SCOS-2000 mission control software (or similar like TSC/CCS) for satellite testing is beneficial.
  • We are looking for someone who is proactive, creative, enthusiastic, result-oriented, and a team player.
  • Good communication skills, able to discuss directly with customers and finding good technical solutions while maintaining control over schedule and budget constraints.
  • Passion for space. Space is hard, with very specific hardware and test methods.

Offer

  • You’ll not only get to work in a well-known space company offering flexibility, work-life balance, and an open and friendly working environment, but you will also become one of the privileged engineers that can say some of the hardware they helped built is actually orbiting Earth!
  • Possibility to grow towards a senior/principal engineering role (Technical expertise) or to a Team Lead role (Technical Management).
  • Temporary contract.
